I always like to say it's easier to add beneficial foods to your diet and crowd out the not-so-good stuff, rather than deprive yourself.
So what should you add to your diet? Let's start with SUPERFOODS. We have all heard the term superfood thrown around over the years but what exactly does it mean?
Superfoods are foods or herbs that have some of the most potent and nutrient-dense properties in the world. Therefore if consumed, they are considered to be incredibly beneficial to your overall health and wellbeing. These ultra-healthy foods come in all shapes and sizes but they all have one thing in common: they are natural and straight from mother earth.
Here are my top five superfoods right now and why:
Spirulina -- this blue-green algae is packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Spirulina boosts your immune system, alkalizes the body, helps to eliminate toxins and supports detoxification.
Maca -- maca root has been known for its medicinal properties for thousands of years. It gives you an energy boost (sans caffeine) and allows your body to adapt and resist things like stress and anxiety. Maca also helps to balance hormones and is rich in potassium, calcium, iron, amino acids and iodine to keep your cells healthy.
Chaga -- the king of medicinal mushrooms. Not only has it been proven to prevent cancers, there are studies that show how chaga even inhibits the progression of certain cancers. Chaga reduces inflammation, boosts your immune system and some suggest that it slows the aging process down. (More chaga, please!)
Reishi -- if chaga is the king, then reishi is the queen. Reishi mushroom enhances your immune system, reduces stress and supports your body's natural sleep cycles. So if you are looking to chill out and need a good night sleep - reach for some reishi.
Blueberries -- also packed with antioxidants such as polyphenols and phytoflavinoids. Blueberries not only boost your immunity, but they reduce the risk of heart disease and regulate your blood sugar.
Add these five things to your diet and feel the benefits in your mind, body and soul.
