Wellness Tips from a Holistic Health Coach

It's easy to get overwhelmed by all of the conflicting health and wellness information out there today. Sometimes it's best to just breathe and get back to the basics.

As a studying holistic health coach, I want to share some of my top wellness tips that are quick, easy and won't break the bank.

-Start each day with warm water and lemon

Warm lemon water is the perfect way to hydrate, purify and revitalize your body first thing in the morning. The lemon allows the water to hydrate you on a deeper level and is an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin B, calcium and magnesium. Drinking lemon water is not only beneficial for jump starting your digestive system, but it alkalizes your body and promotes detoxification.

-Meditation matters

Take five minutes to meditate in the morning. Meditation is free, it's easy and you can do it anywhere at any time. It reduces stress, increases your peace, brings you back to the present moment and helps you to stay focused during your day. Recent studies have shown that meditation plays a large roll in preventing illness and improving physical health conditions. If you can't find five minutes during your day, even one minute is beneficial. Consistency is key.

-Eat whole and natural foods

Consume food in their true form and how nature intended. Cutting back on any processed foods, sugar and refined carbohydrates will do wonders for your mind and body. Here's a tip: try not to eat anything that comes in a box.

-Get some movement in every day

This is an area where a lot of people tend to overthink. Movement does not have to be an hour at the gym pumping iron. I am talking about 10-15 minutes of stretching, yoga, going for a walk, tending to your garden, playing with your kids, etc. Find something you actually enjoy, get your blood pumping and just move.

-Aim for one hour of down time each day

Self care is one of the best gifts you can give yourself and it comes in many different forms. Whether it is simply having some alone time to think and reflect, reading a chapter of your book, taking a bath or journaling -- this time is vital to your mental health.

-Aim to get 7-8 hours of sleep each night

Create a nightly bedtime routine, reduce any screen time after 8pm and try to go to bed at the same time each night. Aim to be in bed before 11pm, as the hours of sleep before midnight are the most crucial for your overall health. Your circadian rhythm is essential for regulating your body and organ systems.

Listen to your body, drink plenty of water, get outside and take it one day at a time.
